The Mayans, The Aztecs, Toltecs, Olmecs, Egyptians. They all built their civilizations so visually mapped out before hand. These structures were great! I mean truly magnificent. People might say "What's so great about some rocks piled on top each other?" Well for one the geography is quite impressive and the ability they must have had to craft and design these is alone astonishing. I don't think their structures were any less great than ours are. 1000 years from now I bet they will still be there. Ours? They'll be gone in half that time, if that. Yes the devices and general technology we have is great but it's also very power hungry and delicate. Past civilizations made almost nothing but physical changes to this earth, while we are quite the opposite. Consistently using multiple sources of energy chemically.. but it's never enough. When will we ever be tired of electricity and the like? I say no. The sad part is that none of this is really necessary. They might argue that electronics help keep in contact etc etc but the ultimate goal of all these is a corrupt one. To be lazier and lazier. When they get cell phones they wonder how they ever went without one? The only reason a cell phone is needed in today's society is because it's built around a problem. A problem we so heavily depend on. Think of it as a twin tower with a bad frame. Some have barely realized there's something wrong with the structure because everyone's so interested in building it higher and higher. The problem is how do we fix our foundation without the whole building collapsing? The core problem is that science is constantly finding out more and more of "we can this and we can that" but the real question is should we? To most past civilizations represent beastly society's without sophistication. This is true.. but is sophistication really, really the "right" thing to do? I mean it seems so good at first to stop bashing animals with sticks for food and start growing things. However in the long run it will eventually lead to the never ending "need" for energy.. which in my eyes, can quite possibly be the death of mankind. So now we have evidence of what mankind is capable of.. but the question remains.. should we have? Have we gone to far? Technology was first used to make life easier because it was so much trouble to start fires and the like.. so we created things to make it easier. However the logic in this only goes so far. When does it transcend from vindicated hard work to pure laziness? Do you think people in the 17th century would have created Ipods? They would have probably said "what is it used for? It doesn't make life easier?! That sounds like something we don't need. What we do need is better ways to go about or ways.. farming, cooking, writing, knowledge etc." My ultimate goal in this passage is introduce profound examination of ancient civilizations. Were they really as stupid as they seem? Or did they chose not to advance eventually becoming today's monsters? I personally think mankind has opened Pandora's box. We have gone beyond what is not only reasonable but safe.Today's society is very very dangerous and not just because of the bad people, but simply the way the world works.. our hunger is a dangerous one. They could have been to stupid to make life easier (of course they wouldn't have come up with TV's! I'm talking about simple ways to make life easier!) or something like this could have happened: They queen is the greatest right? everyone loves the queen. well one day someone presents the queen with a new tool of some sort to make it easier on workers. Well the queen could have rejected the tool foreseeing it's evolution and eventual, overall harm. Or she could have said yes then eventually realized that this is going in the direction of just luxuriousness. That's just something to think about. It's probable that it didn't happen like this, it's just my vision. Anyways, there's obviously a big difference between out society and past society's. I think it's only logical to ask, "Why?"
Live Curious.
